Inspired by the sage brushed expanses of the plains, towering Rocky Mountains and endless skies, I try to capture the colors, texture, and spirit of Colorado in my work. The state's western tradition and my love for horses had also led me to incorporate part of these magnificent animals in my horsehair pots. These vessels are created from wheel thrown clay and then bisque fired. After this intitial firing, they are raku fired and the horsehair is applied to the pot at a temperature of 1400 degrees, resulting in true one-of-a-kind design. The pots are then sealed with wax to enhance the color, smoke and carbon resins to insure their longevity. However, since raku fired clay is porous by nature, the pots are not designed to hold water. Also, as these vessels are fired at a relatively low temperature, they are fragile and need to be handled with love and care.

CUSTOM HORSEHAIR POTS ARE AVAILABLE. Using the tail hair from your horse, you will receive your unique horsehair pot with your horse's name inscribed on the bottom. Please call or email jacqueline@castlewoodpottery.com to discuss custom orders.
